Reliable Green Electricity from Iqony for Saint-Gobain
10-year PPA with 194 GWh // Important step on the path to decarbonization for the international industry leader
Essen. Industrial group Saint-Gobain Germany and German energy company Iqony have signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a reliable supply of solar electricity. Delivery will begin on January 1, 2026, and is scheduled to continue for a period of ten years. The approximately 19.4 GWh of solar electricity per year will come from a newly built PV park in Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany). The Green PPA thus supports Saint-Gobain's ambitious sustainability goals.
Present in Germany since 1853, Saint-Gobain is one of the world's construction products leaders. Today, the industrial group employs more than 161,000 people worldwide. As part of energy-intensive industry, Saint-Gobain has set ambitious sustainability goals and aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
This is where the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) agreed with the German energy company Iqony comes in. Starting January 1, 2026, Iqony will supply Saint-Gobain Germany with solar electricity for a period of ten years. The expected supply volume is approximately 194 GWh over ten years. The electricity will be supplied from a newly built PV park in Rhineland-Palatinate (Germany) via the public power grid with a capacity of 17.605 MWp.
Valuable piece in the mosaic of European industrial transformation
“The cooperation between Saint-Gobain and Iqony is a valuable piece in the mosaic of European industrial transformation. Whether flat glass or building materials, energy-intensive industries in particular still rely on fossil fuels in many cases. At the same time, there are levers that can be used to achieve ambitious sustainability goals. These include the use of green electricity. This is exactly where the Solar PPA from Saint-Gobain Germany and Iqony comes in. It enables us to improve predictability, security of supply, and sustainability in energy supply. I am convinced that the green transformation will succeed if partners work together to drive projects forward with their combined strengths and expertise. This project is the best example of this,” says Kevin Galle, Head of Front Office Trading at Steag Iqony Group.
Frédéric Bouynet, Head of Purchasing at Saint-Gobain Germany, adds: “In view of the challenges posed by climate change, Saint-Gobain has committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. We are working on decarbonizing construction and industry. Reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions plays a key role. That is precisely why the Solar PPA agreed with Iqony is an important step on our company's path to decarbonization.”
