Strategic Partnership: Iqony and suena energy launch AI-based Storage Marketing

The focus is on expanding the operating strategy of an existing storage system to include market-oriented trading mechanisms. The storage system, which previously provided only system services within the framework of the Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR), will now also be used for arbitrage trading on the wholesale electricity markets.

The relevance of the project goes beyond pure economic optimization: the combination of system-friendly and market-friendly operation increases both the revenue potential and the overall economic benefits of battery storage. System-friendly services contribute to grid stability—especially frequency maintenance—while market-friendly trading activities balance price signals on the markets and reduce price fluctuations. This dual role makes storage a key infrastructure in the energy system of the future, as it is the only component of the electricity market that can be operated and built completely without subsidies.

New Standards in Automated Storage Marketing

The suena energy trading autopilot automates storage capacity marketing in a compliant and resource-efficient manner across all relevant wholesale markets. The underlying trading strategy combines real-time forecasts, price signals, and technical status data from the storage facility. Within seconds, the system generates optimized schedules and makes cross-market trading decisions. An integrated degradation model also supports the preservation of cell life – a key factor for sustainable storage management.

“We are delighted to be setting new standards in automated storage marketing together with Iqony,” says Dr. Lennard Wilkening, CEO of suena energy. “The project shows how intelligent trading strategies can optimally combine flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and system stability.”

Partnership for the Future

Kevin Galle, Head of Front Office Trading at Steag Iqony Group, adds: "As Steag Iqony Group, we have a lot of experience in the operation and management of battery storage facilities. With our major project in Duisburg-Walsum, we will be adding another storage facility to our portfolio next year, which we will also manage in the spot and intraday markets. Our existing assets give us the opportunity to actively prepare for this new form of marketing. In suena energy, we have found a partner that already has the necessary systems and experience to market storage facilities in precisely these markets and whose mindset is a very good fit for us. We therefore want to share some of our existing assets in order to prepare for the next generation."

Iqony currently operates six battery storage systems with a total capacity of 90 MW / 90 MWh and plans to expand to 140 MW / 290 MWh by 2026. The cooperation with suena energy marks an important milestone on the way to a comprehensive multi-market strategy that advances both economic performance and the energy transition.
