Climate-neutral heat for Herzogenrath

Iqony and regional utility enwor are working together to develop a blueprint for a successful heating transition in the North Rhine-Westphalian town

Herzogenrath/Saarbrücken/Essen. Iqony Energies GmbH, a Saarbrücken subsidiary of the Essen-based energy company Iqony, and enwor - energie & wasser vor ort GmbH, the regional utility in Herzogenrath, are working together on a feasibility study to identify the opportunities and challenges on the way to a climate-neutral heat supply for the town in the Aachen city region.

Among other things, the plan involves the expansion and conversion of an existing district heating network to renewable energy and waste heat utilization. In the course of this, the partners are also looking at existing buildings, analyzing the development of energy-oriented modernization on the local level and calculating commercial heating requirements in order to have as accurate a picture as possible of the future requirements for a climate-neutral heat supply.

Andreas Loh, Managing Director of Iqony Energies, comments as follows: “As one of Germany’s largest district heating operators and renewable energy service providers, Iqony has extensive expertise in supporting local authorities and municipal utilities such as Herzogenrath and enwor on their way to a successful local heating transition.”

Blueprint follows BEW standards
The current study is being prepared in accordance with the criteria of the federal funding program for efficient heating networks (BEW), and therefore corresponding options for pro rata federal funding are ensured if the plan is implemented in the future.  Another key aspect of the joint conceptual study is to document the current and future potential of renewable energies and utilization of industrial waste heat in Herzogenrath.

Dr. Stephan Nahrath, Technical Director of enwor, adds: “Our aim is to successfully shape the energy and heat transition for the citizens of Herzogenrath. In order to achieve this, we have found an experienced partner in the form of Iqony to support us, and we will benefit from their many years of experience.”

Results expected at the end of 2024
The joint development of the strategy will start immediately. The partners will also be supported by BET, the energy management and technical planning firm based in Aachen. The aim is to have well-founded results by the end of this year, which will then form the basis for further municipal heating planning in Herzogenrath.

Long-term cooperation planned
Following the successful completion of the study, both partners are aiming for further long-term cooperation. This will focus on the implementation of specific measures that will be derived from the results of the conceptual study which is currently being prepared.
